The site has the remains of a dozen whaling boats and propellers, buildings, jetties and an entire sunken whaling boat. After the final season whaling in the Ross Sea area and later in the Weddell Sea, the fleet bypassed its Stewart Island base and sailed north up the Atlantic for home.

They never returned to New Zealand and the base was used for repairing local vessels until it was abandoned.

Sawmilling was an important industry on Stewart Island/Rakiura from the s to the s.
